World Sake Day, also known as “Nihonshu no Hi 日本酒の日 ” in Japan, is a significant date for sake enthusiasts, and anyone intrigued by the rich traditions of Japanese culture and its iconic rice alcohol production. Celebrated on the 1st of October each year, this special day marks the beginning of the sake brewing season in Japan.
In Japan, during the month of October, sake breweries open their doors to the public, offering tours, tastings, and a chance to learn about the art of sake-making. Visitors can witness the meticulous process of rice milling, fermentation, and aging, and gain a deeper appreciation for this beloved traditional Japanese beverage.
Similarly here in London, you may notice that Japanese cultural centres and restaurants will host special events during October, featuring themed menus, sake pairings, and educational seminars. These gatherings provide the perfect opportunity to expand your knowledge of sake, sample a variety of flavours and styles, and indulge in the harmonious combination of Japanese food and sake.

I had an exciting opportunity to extend an invite to culture blogger Danielle Miller (@gonesunshere) to join me at the invitation-only event “Refreshing Perspective – Women’s Voices on the Future of Sake & Wine“. We heared from leading women in the sake world about the future of Japanese sake and wine. The event, which included a sake tasting reception, took place at Japan House earlier this week on Monday 25th September.
